Frederick finishes fifth

National high-jumper, Priscilla Frederick finished fifth in the finals of the Commonwealth Games in Australia on Saturday.

The U.S.-born athlete, whose signature purple hair made waves at the Games, jumped a season’s best of 1.87 metres finishing fifth behind gold medallist, Lavern Spencer (St. Lucia) -1.91 metres, silver medallist, Morgan Lake (England) -1.93 metres, bronze medallist, Nicola Mcdermott (Australia) and fourth place, Alyxandria Treasure (Canada) – 1.91 metres.

Frederick, despite not gaining a medal, won over the crowd with her antics and performance in the finals and even caught the attention of Queensland Commonwealth Games Minister, Kate Jones, who contacted her via Twitter after the finals.

The 29-year-old who has a personal best of 1.91 metres issued a response via Facebook.

“Thank you so much to everyone for their incredible support! This Commonwealth Games has been amazing!!! Started my outdoor season off right!! 5th place and 1.87m…I’ll take what God gives me…”

Frederick is the second athlete from the Antigua and Barbuda 7-member contingent to make the finals as shot-putter, Jess St. John finished 7th with a new national record of 17.32 metres.
